My Baracoa digs at a fort turned hotel…

So, this was my office during my stay at Baracoa. I stayed at the 3 star El Castillo Hotel, on the highest point of Baracoa, built in 1739 as a fort called El Castillo Seboruco.

El Castillo Hotel offers unparalleled views of the city from every angle, and great breezes in all the open areas (no central air; window air conditioning units in rooms).

The renovation into a hotel removed the cannons, but kept the original 94 steps from the street level to the entrance to the hotel.

Yes, the climb is exactly as arduous as it looks, and given my daily routine of meetings, hikes and late dinners I made the up and down trek at least twice a day, sometimes 3 times.

I worked muscles I didn't know I had.
